System Engineer - Embedded Systems - Wireless/RF Communication

Company is seeking a creative Systems Engineer to lead multiple programs focused on the development and commercialization of systems that collect data from electronic sensors. This person will lead the design and integration of products on flexible substrates from the component-level to system-level for automated readout by PC or other end user device. Programs will include stand-alone, self-contained sensor systems as well as connected Internet of Things (IoT) applications in fields as diverse as wearable electronics, industrial monitoring, the military space and the medical industry. In this role you will apply a diverse set of process technology, hardware, firmware, and software integration skills to support these commercialization programs.

As part of our product development group in Savage, MN this person will collaborate to implement methods and controls to meet customer and commercial requirements including product performance, quality standards, cost and delivery. This position has high visibility to management as the person in this role will drive products from concept through prototype and support handoff to volume production.

Essential Functions:

  • Technical project lead for concurrent sensor system design and development programs.
  • Responsible for developing the architecture for sensor systems including Embedded control systems, custom circuit development and system integration.
  • Manage outside contract engineering resources to support design projects.
  • Design electrical circuits based upon performance, reliability, and cost requirements.
  • Create and manage engineering documentation including schematics, drawings, specification sheets, and bill of materials.
  • Work with management and product development teams to define requirements documents that quantify engineering and company goals, including transition of developed products to production.
  • Create test procedures to ensure product performance meets design requirements.
  • Interact with suppliers to select components that meet requirements.
  • Assist in troubleshooting system and product performance issues.
  • Assist technicians and tool operators in build and test as required.
  • Create patent and other intellectual property disclosures where applicable.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • In order to comply with U.S. export control laws and regulations, this position requires applicants to either provide proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status or be eligible to receive an export authorization (a license) under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and/or the Export Administration Regulations.
  • Graduate Degree Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and 2+ years of experience working in a product or technology development setting related to electronics or flexible circuits; or B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science and 7+ years of experience working in a product development setting related to electronics or flexible circuits
  • Strong background in system development with Microprocessor-controlled I/O hardware
  • Software development experience in an ultra-low power Embedded environment
  • Experience with firmware development including the tools used to edit, compile/assemble and debug code in an Embedded environment
  • Experience in an integrated development environment (IDE) developing, testing and documenting code for Microcontroller-based environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science.
  • Software development experience working with Real Time operating systems (RTOS)
  • Experience with a variety of wireless/RF communication technologies such as NFC, BLE, LoRa, WiFi (802.11)
  • Familiarity with IAR Embedded Workbench, Eclipse, or Code Composer Studio IDEs
  • Familiarity with Ansys Electronic Desktop, including HFSS and Maxwell packages
  • Familiarity with JSON or XML data formats for cloud-based data collection for services such as Amazon Web Services, MS Azure, and Google Cloud Platform
  • Familiarity with programming languages for processing data after readout of the product - languages may include Android, iOS, Python, Java, C++, VBA, PHP, or MySQL
  • Prior experience with Flexible Hybrid Electronics (FHE) at development, prototype, and production product life cycle stages
  • Experience with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) in an Embedded environment

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Able to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals and technical procedures. Able to write reports, work instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Problem solving skills to support design for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Independently creative and organized with strong collaboration skills
  • Exposure to a variety of sensor systems with quantifiable skills in the development of Embedded Microcontroller systems, electrical layout design (both analog and digital), design validation, functional validation, and project management.
  • Able to drive technology integration and adoption
